Many people consider works of art created during the
period 300-1453 AD to be dark, mystical and overwhelmingly
religious. This is however, not entirely true.
European Medieval art is greatly influenced by the early
Christian Church of Roman Empire. The main function of art in
this era was to educate the masses away from paganism. Hence,
their message is often straightforward and understood by people
of the time.
Typical characteristics of Medieval paintings is brightly
colorful to the point of garishness. The paintings portray the
religious optimism and exuberance of the era. Most of it is more
"illuminating" than "dark", and more "to
the point" than "mystical".
